Falcon Closure Catches Hikers by Surprise

Last weekend's warm, sunny weather brought sun-starved hikers to the Cape Horn Trail.

The 7-mile loop, with its views, wildflowers, and waterfall, has become a springtime favorite, but hikers last weekend were greeted by an unwelcome surprise: New signs announcing that the lower and most scenic portion of the trail is now closed to protect falcon habitat.

Some of the signs said the trail is closed until July 15th, others said July 1. The postings are the direct result of a controversial decision by the Forest Service to protect the falcon zone by closure rather than public education.

The falcons, descendants of pairs that have lived on the I-405 Fremont Bridge in downtown Portland for decades, nest on inaccessible cliffs below or above the trail (they move its location every few years).

Peregrine falcons represent a stunning conservation success story. In 1980, in all of Washington state, there were just 4 nesting pairs. Today there are at least 120.

Their dispute over a 7 1/2 cent raise is complicated by a budding romance, which parallels the ups and downs of the labor/ management negotiations while turning the workplace into a the ideal musical comedy background. This is an evening of non-stop familiar Broadway pop standards of the '50's including "Steam Heat", "Hey There" and "Hernando's Hideaway" filled with dance number after dance number.
